This happened in 1958:

  • LEGO continued to expand their operations and by 1958 there were 140 employees in Billund
  • The Lego brick design is improved to allow better versatility and "locking" ability.
  • Ole Kirk Christiansen dies; Godtfred inherits leadership of the LEGO Company.
  • The LEGO Group files for patents in Denmark for the stud-and-tube coupling system. This new system makes models much more stable. Filed 28 Jan 1958 and granted 29 Jan 1962
  • The first four 45° sloped roof bricks; the 2 × 2 slope, 2 × 4 slope, 2 × 2 peak and 2 × 4 peak were introduced
  • The hollow bottom 2 × 2, 2 × 3, 2 × 4, 2 × 8, 2 × 10 and 4 × 4 corner brick molds were discontinued (other parts from the Automatic Binding Brick were left in production until the moulds wore out several years later)
  • Beginning in 1958 Lego began to use international Lego System boxes that had no language specific text. This practice of single international boxes, and later instruction books, was used for many years
