Ra's Al Ghul was a nomad who left his tribe to live in a city and work as a physician, where he met the love of his life. An ill prince became jealous of his wife, but allowed Ra's to save him. The physician used a pit with mystical powers to head the prince, but it drove him mad and he strangled the physician's wife. Unwilling to take responsibility for his crime, he locked the physician up.
The physician was freed by a boy whose mother he saved previously. The physician sought out his family and sacked the city after giving the prince a deadly virus. He then adopted the name Ra's Al Ghul, which means "Demon's Head" in Arabic and began searching the world, using the pits to rejuvenate himself.
After the French Revolution, he realized that man was destroying the natural beauty of the Earth and launched a genocide campaign to eliminate most of humanity.
In the present day, Ra's came to Gotham City to recruit Batman who his daughter, Talia had fallen in love with. However, Batman and his allies have often opposed Ra's and his League of Shadows.
