Cam Attaway,[1] often simply called Cam, is an Alpha Team minifigure introduced in 2000 before making her physical debut in 2001.

Description[]

In LEGO Alpha Team, Cam wears a black Alpha Team uniform with red as her secondary color on her right side. She wears a sleeveless shirt, exposing her bright yellow arms. Her torso is decorated with a chain necklace, the Alpha Team emblem, and a dark grey work vest equipped with an oil can and three wrenches. Her legs have pouches and kneepads. She has short bright red hair with black tips. Her face has red lipstick, blue sunglasses, feminine eyelashes, angled eyebrows, and a microphone headset.

Cam's first physical minifigure recreates her design from the video game, but greatly simplifies the details on her work vest and changes the shape of the oil canister. Her hair is a bright red Mini Wig, Girl and loses the black tips. Her blue sunglasses are clear with purple tints, and she has purple eyeshadow.

In Mission Deep Sea, Cam has wears an earth blue wetsuit without any of the mechanic gear from her previous iterations. Her torso has a zipper that is partially unzipped, barely revealing a white undershirt. The Alpha Team logo has been moved to her left breast, and a pair of zipper pockets have been added directly beneath. She has a utility belt and leg printing similar to other Alpha Team agents. Her hair color has been changed to dark red, her sunglasses have been removed, and she now has green eyes with red eyeshadow. Her hair can alternatively be replaced with a dark grey scuba airtank and helmet with a transparent blue visor.

Background[]

Cam Attaway is a member of Alpha Team, acting as the team's mechanic and motors expert. She is one of the top agents and a trusted teammate of Dash Justice.

In the intro cutscene of LEGO Alpha Team, Cam is captured by the Evil OGEL Empire and held prisoner in a Trouble Tube on Ogel Island. Dash Justice rescues her, and then they go after Ogel, who escapes in a teleporter. These events do not happen in-game, where Cam's Trouble Tube is instead located in the Goo Caverns at the Trouble Sub docking bay, where she is freed by Charge in the level "Trouble Sub Rescue". Upon exiting the Trouble Tube, Cam presses a Plunger Lock to shut down the Goo Caverns' power, and then her motor equipment is unlocked for use in the subsequent Deep Sea Orb Factory and Arctic Command Base missions.

In The Return of Ogel, Cam pilots the Alpha Team mini-sub in Sector 2, where a shark eats a Mind Control Orb and inadvertently saves Cam from being brainwashed. She comes to Dash's rescue in Sector 5 and chases after two of Ogel's disguised Skeleton Drones.

In Cam's classic training assignment, she must equip her motorcycle to drive away quickly before the Mind Control Orbs reach her. In her Mission Deep Sea training assignment, she deploys Tee Vee's ROV to locate a secret Ogel transmitter.[2]

In Evil Music, Cam checks on Dash during his vacation, only for both Alpha Team agents to witness brief storms. They trace the storms to Volcano Island, where Cam uses her Meta-Rama to detect life inside the volcano and a secret entrance to the worker drone tunnels. Once inside Ogel's secret cave, Cam deduces that his pipe organ is the source of the storms. She uses her Meta-Rama's motorized control beam to block Ogel's bad weather until the pipe organ malfunctions.

In Into the Deep, Cam and Radia discover Ogel's new Mind Control Orb when it washes ashore, and Cam uses Radia's disarming device to deactivate it. They accompany Dash in their investigation of mutant sea creatures, and Cam uses her stun gun to put the mutants to sleep while they rescue the Sea Colony 7 scientists; afterward, Cam deduces that Ogel is responsible. Cam and Dash eventually enter the Ogel Underwater Base, where Cam distracts Ogel while Dash destroys his evil orb machine. Cam later spots Ogel escaping in his Ogel Mutant Squid.

In Into the Swirling Sargasso!, Cam's Alpha Team Navigator is surrounded by Ogel Mutant Killer Whales while low on fuel and with a jammed sonar. She initiates Deep Sea Emergency Maneuver 1-B to escape, accidentally resulting in Charge discovering the Ogel Underwater Base in WATER, WATER... Nowhere?

Behind the Scenes[]

LEGO Alpha Team lead designer described difficulty in settling upon Cam's character design, which was inspired by actress Janeane Garofalo.[3]

The family name Attaway first appeared in the 1997 design document for LEGO Adventurers, where Harry Cane was named Kit Attaway.[4] A very similarly-named action heroine called Cat Attaway has a character profile in the LEGO Media International Character Development document written by Wes Jenkins on May 26, 2000.[5] It is unclear whether Cat is an early name for Cam, or if the two character names were conflated when Cam Attaway appeared in Desktop Minifigs in 2002.

Notes[]

  • In Germany, Cam's name was changed to Cosma in the video game and early 2001 catalogs.
  • Along with Crunch, Cam did not appear in Mission Deep Freeze. Her role as Dash's close companion and Alpha Team's top mechanic was largely succeeded by Arrow.
  • Cam was played by Jenny Mitchell in the Alpha Team Harbour Stunt Show at LEGOLAND Windsor Resort in 2001.[6][7] Mitchell also played Constable Casey in the Jack Stone Stunt Show in 2002 and Pippin Reed in the Orient Express in 2003.[6]
