Blacktron Future Generation, marketed as simply Blacktron outside the USA, is a faction featured in LEGO's Space theme and was introduced in 1991. It's a visually updated continuation of the original Blacktron line from 1987. It is unofficially known as "Blacktron II" by fans.
Description[]
In 1991, Blacktron received a makeover with uniforms somewhat similar to M-Tron: black with white trim, neon yellow/green canopies and visors, and new chest emblem. It also replaced the creative but haphazard interchangeability of Blacktron with refined and mostly uniform cockpit globes (best seen here), which could be switched unimpeded between those ships. Only four sets of eleven featured them.

Blacktron Future Generation seemed to be mostly a rehash of Blacktron I on a set-by-set basis.
They picked up where Blacktron left off as an outlaw faction of space pirates. In the 1991 catalogue, Blacktron Future Generation is seen attacking M-Tron's 6989 Mega Core Magnetizer. All of the Space Police II sets released in 1992 each have a Blacktron Future Generation astronaut as a prisoner. A 1993 television ad shows the 6981 Aerial Intruder attempting to steal from Ice Planet 2002's 6983 Ice Station Odyssey.
Most LEGO catalogs consistently describe Blacktron Future Generation as spies and outlaws. Oddly, the 1993 Canadian catalog is an exception, which claims that Blacktron are galactic defenders who keep the peace.[1]
In addition to Blacktron Future Generation's own designated subtheme, the faction sees representation as prisoners in Space Police II. Rench from Space Police III has a Blacktron Future Generation logo on his standard Blacktron uniform, and the Space Villain from Series 3 has a Blacktron Future Generation logo on his suit, indicating that both villains have connections with Blacktron Future Generation.

In the centre of the space galaxies the Blacktron spies are always in trouble. They constantly try to steal inventions and computers from the M-Trons. The Blacktron Spy Base, Set 6988, has a raised building surface with crater design. This is hollow and is used as the underground hideout which is entered by a hinged grid on the top. The set comes with the Electric System which gives flashing lights on the bridge. The Spy Base will cost around £50. On the Blacktron Intruder Force, Set 6981, the central fluorescent green cover lifts up to lower a ramp to let two mini vehicles drive down. Up above is the space craft Octopod, Set 6887, as it tries to out manoeuvre the M-Trons. The X-shape swing-wings move position to help dodge and escape them. The fluorescent cockpit can be opened and also disconnected to be used separately if needed. The Octopod will cost around £8.00. The smaller sets include a Star Rider, Set 6832, for around £2.75 and a Spy Buggy, Set 6812, for around £1.75. Extra touch down plates can be bought to extend your Blacktron bases and a set of six figures is available to add to your Space Police, M-Tron and Blacktron forces. So if you're looking for action the new Blacktron sets could be just what you need - and they are in the shops now. |
