Two forms of advertising that's recently be getting on my nerves :)

1- blogs
  • Several users come on here, make a new blog post saying "visit this tiny wiki I just made! [link]", and that's the whole post. Sometimes, they also go around to random user's talk pages and say "join my wiki!". Can we please add it to the blog policy that these kinds of blogs can be deleted straight away? I've got nothing against people advertising their own wikis on their userpages or whatever, but blogs usually lead to the same comments over and over, and it's just a waste of time in the RC. And getting message like that on your talk page is just plain annoying (I'm talking about the case where people send the same copy-pasted message to 20 people, if you were talking to someone for a while, reaslised they might be interested and just tell them about a wiki, I don't have anything against that of course)
2- "sources"
  • Some users come on here, and post links to certain sites that contain no new information, it's usually second-hand, usually from some other site, but sometimes even copied from here. Obviously, the more links they have here, the more likely people are to visit their sites. There are one or two sites which I see links posted all over the wiki, but the links themselves offer no information that isn't already listed by another source. So, can we make it that the sources section should only contain where the original information came from? (or, if the original place is in another language which often happens, where the original place where the information is translated into English?).

Also, about both cases, would it be ok to make a {{Warn1|advertising}} notice? NightblazeSaber 01:44, December 7, 2011 (UTC)

I have to say, both of those tend to be annoying. In general:

  • Leaving irrelevant messages on people's talk pages, known on Wikipedia as canvassing, is definitely disruptive.
  • Creating blogs to advertise new wikis, however, is not. Blogs are a great way to draw attention to projects that you're starting, and people can choose to read them or not.
  • External link spam is disruptive, just as it is on Wikipedia.

  • We had someone who came on chat the other day telling us all to edit his wiki which was just a copy of this -_- Prisinorzero 14:47, March 24, 2012 (UTC)
  • I don't mind. It is getting annoying *cough*Mr. Brick*cough* --Czech 09:31, March 28, 2012 (UTC)
