The LMS Explorer in the game's intro cutscene

The LMS Explorer (alternatively formatted as L.M.S. Explorer[1] and italicized as LMS Explorer),[1][2] also known as the HMS Explorer[3] (alternatively formatted as H.M.S. Explorer),[1] is a Rock Raiders vehicle featured in media in 1999 and 2000. While it does not appear in any sets, the LMS Explorer is depicted in the theme's video games, books, and LEGO Adventures! Magazine comics. 2200945 Rock Raiders - High Adventure Deep Underground features a much smaller miniature scale model of the Explorer as an inspiration model.

Description[]

The LMS Explorer is a massive spaceship that is predominantly grey with dark grey and bright bluish green highlights and transparent fluorescent green windows. The interior of the ship uses many bright bluish green tiles and elements as well as bright yellow and black patterning. These colors match the rest of the Rock Raiders theme's color scheme.

The miniature H.M.S. Explorer model in 2200945 Rock Raiders - High Adventure Deep Underground is mostly dark grey. It is decorated with bright yellow and bright blue bricks. The transparent fluorescent green elements are accompanied by transparent fluorescent reddish-orange and transparent light blue; these colors are also present on the full-scale model but to a much lesser degree.

Background[]

The LMS Explorer is the spaceship used by the Rock Raiders to travel across the galaxy. The Rock Raiders crew and their vehicles are stationed aboard the ship when they are not deployed on missions. Chief views the Explorer as his home and is said to not have left the ship in twenty years.

During a return trip from the outer rim of the galaxy, the LMS Explorer is caught in an asteroid field and pulled in by a wormhole. A giant asteroid strikes the ship, heavily damaging it and causing it to lose power. The Explorer is sucked into the wormhole and stranded in another galaxy. With the damaged ship running on emergency power, the Rock Raiders use its scanners to determine that the nearby Planet U is rich in Brickonium Energy Crystals and LEGO Ore. Rock Raiders and vehicles are teleported between the Explorer and Planet U during the mining operation for these precious minerals. After a successful mission, the Explorer is repaired and refueled, allowing the Rock Raiders to return home, albeit with a Rock Monster stowaway in Rock Raiders - An Interactive Puzzle Storybook. In B5458 Readers Level 4 - Race for Survival, the LMS Explorer returns to Planet U for a research expedition.

Behind the Scenes[]

Large portions of the LMS Explorer were physically built during the development of the video game.[4]

Notes[]

  • "HMS" is an abbreviation that means "His/Her Majesty's Ship" in a monarchy's navy, although it is unclear what navy the HMS Explorer would belong to or what "LMS" would stand for. In the manual of 5708 LEGO Rock Raiders, the LMS Explorer is described as a "huge mining ship", which may be what the initials "HMS" stand for in this context.
  • Assets from the LMS Explorer's interior are reused in LEGO Adventures! comics for LEGO Racers and Life on Mars, since the magazine comics were also produced by Data Design Interactive's Artworld UK divsion.
