Mindstorms

Mindstorms is a theme which uses a combination of Technic and System pieces. It was first introduced in 1998. Mindstorms are controlled by a master brick to which various motors, and other sensors can be attached. This master brick can be programmed using a computer to take inputs from the sensors, interpret and then act on the data with the motors or other output devices like Lego lamps. This allows for the creation of wireless lego robots.
Sensors can be things like, thermometers, light sensors, sound sensors, touch sensors, and Ultrasonic sensors.
There are 3 motor ports and 4 sensor ports as well as a usb port. You can download programs using either a usb cable or bluetooth. Nxtg is what comes with the set for you to use when programing the micro controller, though there are also programming environments for RobotC and Java.
