Mystique is a shape shifting mutant and the mother of the X-Man Nightcrawler (who she abandoned at birth.) As a child, she attempted to steal food from a young Charles Xavier, disguised as his mother (due to her being a homeless orphan) but Charles found out who she really was as he knew his mother would never go in his kitchen. When Mystique revealed her true form, she also revealed her name, Raven Darkholme. Charles let her live with him as his adoptive sister. When they grew up, they met a mutant named Erik Lensherr who had the ability to control metal. Knowing that other mutants attempted to start World War III, they forged a team of good mutants that were the founding members of the X-Men. After World War III was averted, Erik, now using the alias Magneto, decided to do exactly what the war would have done: wipe out all non-mutant humans. He forged a team of evil mutants and had Mystique join him as they accepted who she was. Mystique became a loyal servant of Magneto, going as far as blocking a dart that could turn mutants into normal humans with her own body, but became devastated when she was kicked out of the brotherhood, as she was no-longer a mutant, to the point where she exposed Magneto's weakness to the government.
Following Wolverine's alteration of the timeline, Mystique became a messiah for the mutant race. She fought alongside the X-Men against Apocalypse, afterward becoming their field leader. Despite this, she is missing in the present Wolverine returned to.
