SpongeBob SquarePants was a 2006 licensed line. It was based on the SpongeBob SquarePants television series featured on Nickelodeon. The line still continued five years later. Unlike most themes, this one included a variety of interesting pieces, as the characters and sets were different from most themes. Also, many variations had been seen, including the most famous: Squidward's head changing from a standard minifigure head to a special, more accurate head. Each set was based upon the adventures or life of SpongeBob SquarePants.

After LEGO got the Disney franchise from MEGA BLOKS in 2010, MEGA BLOKS announced they have a new license with Nickelodeon, owners of SpongeBob SquarePants. However, in 2011, it was revealed that the license was only with Nick Jr. and did not effect LEGO's current license.
