Yah, whatever with you guys. To me, it really made the movie awesome as well as making a lot of sense out of the film. In fact, had it not been for that scene, I would've thought most of the scenes had plot holes. Like, if Business stole the Kragle 8 1/2 years ago, why didn't he use it 8 1/2 years ago? If Octan had security cameras watching Emmet touch the Piece of Resistence underground, then wouldn't that mean they knew the location of the piece this whole time? Why would Vitruvius hide in The Old West if Business clearly had robots like Sheriff Not-a-robot operating there? Wouldn't Cloud Cuckoo Land be a better place to hide? Why wasn't Vitruvius wearing a disguise while exposed to the public when playing the piano (though, one can argue that Business wouldn't recognize him in his new robes, but theres a pretty damn obvious resemblance)? How did Batman know when to save Emmet, Vitruvius, and Wyldstyle while they were falling? The ending solves this problem by showing us that its just a kid having fun making up whatever crap he wants because its HIS imagination. But at the same time, it shows us that the world he created is REAL so it doesn't let down the people, like you guys, who want it to be real! I hope this has changed your view of the ending, since it really made the film better for me.
@ Above: exactly.
I knew about the twist before going into the movie, and I expected it to ruin the movie... but it wasnt what I was expecting.
Its not as if the world the Legos were lviing in was entirely imaginary or entirely false... Emmet did summon the will to actually move in the human world after all, not something an inanimate object does not do.
The world the legos lived in though was fueled by the imaginations of the people in the human world, two worlds intrinsically linked but still separate in their own ways.
I dont think it was "just all a kids imagination" it was more than that in the context of the movie... but not in the message the film was conveying.
you have to seperate the universe of the film... or rather universes... from the messages that were being shown.
Creativity is good, but without a plan it is useless. Workign together is great, but conforming doesnt need to be a part of that. You can grow up... but not have to take every single part of life seriously.
And believe it or not... people want to do the right thing, even if they dont always know how... bad guys are something rare...
There is so much to be learned from the Lego movie, lessons not told my other movies... the Lego movie is a million times more intelligent than 90% of the kids movies put out these days which are largely just smart-talking animals in "waaaacky" situations.
So I feel like if you say the ending of the movie "ruined" it... that you werent paying attention to what was actually going on, and I would like to believe it was because you were too wrapped up with the message of the movie to notice what was going on.
side note... anyone else actualyl ever use a sucker stick as a lego-staff XD that detail made me smile :3
Because you dont like themes about the relationship between god and man... about understanding that there might be things greater than ourselfs... themes about the power of imagination both on our level and above us having implications beyond the immediate.
I really liked this twist on several levels... it wasnt super important to the movie, and it didnt devastate the legos universe, like I said the legos still exist in their own universe with their own rules and their thoughts and lives.
I especially thought it was interesting because... Emmet looked into the face of what was essentially god and he realized that almost nothing he did could change their goals.
That is the thing about god, if there is one... then we dont have control over that aspect of reality... but what we do have control over is how we act, and how we treat each other.
and in the end that was pretty important to the story I felt...
I dont know, I thought it was touching and interesting.

I liked Finn and The Man Upstairs, but they very end, probably the last few seconds of the movie, creeped me out so much. Especially those voices!
ya, real life people completley ruined it
I agree with everything that Ralok has said. Let me just start by saying that the Lego Movie is my favorite movie of all time. I love it so much!!! The ending with the real world did not ruin it at all, it completed it and made it truly amazing!!! People are hating on it only because they think that it means that the Lego Universe was never real and it was just a kid playing with his toys the entire time and it was simply only his imagination. BUT, THIS IS FALSE! The Lego Universe actually was real. Here are 5 reasons proving that it was real.
1) "Emmet moves himself in the Real World" When the Man Upstairs/Finn's dad set Emmet on the table Emmet thought to himself and willed himself to move and jump off the table thus proving that he is alive and not an inanimate object that has only just been played with. Many try to debunk this with theories such as, " The dad must have been shaking the table without knowing causing Emmet to fidget around and fall off." Really?! That makes no sense because if the dad was shaking the table then other things on the table would start shaking too not just Emmet and how would he not know he is shaking the table and keep looking at Emmet suspiciously again and again? That would mean that he stopped shaking the table each time and that's dumb because that would obviously make him realize that he is shaking the table if he was shaking it. So, obviously the dad wasn't shaking the table. Another theory I have heard is, " The kid was just imagining that Emmet moved himself and also imagined the dad looking at Emmet suspiciously too." That theory doesn't make any sense either because if it was true then how did Emmet end up on the floor? The dad shaking the table? I already debunked that!
2) " Lego Universe puppeted by Gods" Wasn't it pretty obvious that the "Man UpStairs" refers to God? As in he is the God of the Lego Universe. Early in the movie in the beginning first 9 minutes of it Emmet finds the piece of Resistance and when he touches it he sees visions of the events that will occur later in the film that flash on screen quickly but they flash long enough for you to be able to see a human figure and a human hand. Then, soon later during the scene inside Emmet's mind the human hand appears as a thought inside of it as Vitruvius explains that this is the Man UpStairs, the god of their universe. Then, when Emmet falls through the Magic Portal into the real world he sees Finn and the Man UpStairs. The Man Upstairs is then shown controlling the Lego Universe as what he does in the real world plays out differently in the Lego Universe when he uses the Krazy glue on the Lego people which in the Lego Universe causes the MicroManagers to freeze the citizens. People argue to this by saying, " If the Legos are alive and just semi-controlled by the Man UpStairs and Finn then why is Emmet an inanimate toy with a smile stuck on his face who can't open his mouth or talk or move correctly?" This is because throughout the events of the film up until the real world is revealed Finn was controlling the Lego Universe acting as the God to enact the movement and actions of Emmet and the other characters. But, when Emmet is in the real world Emmet and Finn's consciousness and existence are then in the same existential realm meaning Emmet is no longer controlled in any way and has complete free will but due to this he doesn't know to be animate because his actions had been enacted by Finn but in the real world realm he is only controlled by himself so that's why it was a struggle for him to move.
3) "The Magic Portal" The Magic Portal is an extremely important factor to this because it is the direct connection between the Lego Universe and human world. However, it is important to realize that the portal that Emmet jumped into while in the Lego Universe that lead him into the real world was not the same portal that he traveled through to get back into his world. When Emmet jumped into this in the Lego Universe this portal was actually in the real world the edge of the table as the Octan Tower was placed at the edge of the table in the real world basement. Soon, later when Finn decides he must get Emmet back to the Lego Universe he revalues through a cardboard tube labeled "Magic Portal" which Finn drops him into in which when Emmet drops into it and within seconds Emmet starts to be able to move his face and body again and becomes fully animate again upon returning into his own world. Why is this important? It is important because when Emmet is falling through the portal leading him to the real world he does not become inanimate until he actually arrives there unlike by contrast when he is returning to his own world he starts becoming animate during the transition. This shows that he is an animate being and that being inanimate in the real world was due to him not being in his own universe for which he can correspond his actions accordingly to.
4) " Emmet thinks in the Real World" Many argue this, " The kid Finn was just imagining Emmet thinking to himself." But, that is wrong because when Emmet first arrives in the Real World he is already thinking before Finn even notices that Emmet arrived because Finn is occupied playing with the spaceship. About 30 seconds later after Emmet's thoughts of wondering where he is Finn notices him on the floor. Finn couldn't have imagined Emmet's thoughts while he was in the Real world because Emmet was already shown to be thinking before Finn even noticed that Emmet was there. Simple as that.
5) "Emmet learns to control things for himself in the Lego Universe" When Emmet returns from the Real World and arrives back in the Lego Universe he is now able to control things for himself with complete free will because he has perceived the gods, Finn and The Man Upstairs and now being consciously aware of their existence is able to break free from their control knowing that the consciousness he had been in before was not fully enacted by himself. So, knowing this, this is what causes Emmet to suddenly be able to see all of the building codes that master builders see and becomes at his full potential becoming a master builder able to build the large construction mech to fight the MicroManagers. The MicroManagers being the Lego Universe's representation of the control that they are under but since Emmet now realizes the existence of the gods and their control they had over him he fights their Lego Universe counterparts the MicroManagers, breaking free from control and enacting his own free will. However, he is only able to do so because this is during the time when Finn distracts the father in order for Finn to transport Emmet back into the Lego Universe, a time where the Legos actions are not being controlled by the gods as they are not using them at the time because this leads to the scene where Finn's father has a change of heart and is talking to Finn scene where they are not using the Lego set meaning that not only Emmet but also every other Lego temporarily has complete free will represented in the way they are fighting off and defeating the MicroManagers who represent Finn and the Man Upstairs controlling them.
These reasons prove that the Lego Universe is real and that the Legos in the movie are actually alive but are just in an alternate controlled universe dependent on the actions of the gods in the real world.
I LOVE the ending. Very touching moment and it really captured what LEGOs are all about while also playing around with themes of existentialism. Having humans in it didn't ruin it, it made the movie better and reminded me of the way I feel when I'm playing with my LEGO figures and sets. The only gripe is that in The LEGO Batman Movie, The Ninjago Movie and the sequel to The LEGO Movie they can't really pull off the same kind of twist or play around too much with the concept.
