Okay, from what I've seen they're here to stay, but I'd like to explain a few things.
First of all, badges are simply a way of recording how much work someone has done:
When someone does a lot of work, you would tell them they did a good job.
Likewise, a Badge doesn't actually mean anything other than that they've done a lot of work-congratulations isn't exactly correct; commendation for a job well done is.
Basically: tell people they've done a good job when they get a badge, don't congratulate them just because they get a big badge. The badge isn't important. The hard work is.
